Red Roosters Win in Extra Innings
We beat the Monroe Channelcats 2-1 in ten innings. Mario Sencion pitched a solid 7 2/3 innings allowing one run. In the bottom of the tenth, Nick Chinners had a lead off walk. Tyler Howard then bunted him over to second. Wes Wilson then followed with the game winning single into left field. I will try to update more tomorrow.
A Week's Worth of Updates
Carolina Games
We split two games with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. We lost Game 1 2-1. The base umpire and I had disagreed with a play at second base where Wes Wilson was trying to stretch a single into a double. He did a great job in being aggressive on the outfielder, who took his time getting to the ball. Mr. Umpire didn't want to listen to what I had to offer and gently asked me to leave the field (I got ejected). From there Coach Hanson took over the rest of Game 1 and all of Game 2. In the last inning the we had the bases loaded and no outs, but were unable to get in the tying run.
In Game 2, we ran the bases and hit the ball the way we had earlier in the season: very aggressively. It was to our advantage as we won the game 9-1. Kudos should go out to Tyler Howard, Mike DiPietropolo, and Rodney Francis. All stepped in to help out our pitching staff in ways they usually wouldn't. You can read more about them in the game recaps below.
The split series puts our record at 14-10.
Statistic Updates
Statistics should be updated at some point today. They can be found here.
Players of the Games
June 23rd vs. Anson- Mike Pagano
This was a tough game. Mike did a great job of keeping us in the game. In seven innings he allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits and had seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, our offense struggled again, and we blew up in the ninth inning. We allowed seven runs in the ninth inning. In that inning we committed four physical errors, multiple mental errors, and had a lack of hustle. We ended up losing 10-2. Another player to note was Rodney Francis, who went 2 for 4 scored a run and had two stolen bases on the night.
June 25th @Anson- Mike Goltz
Mike has really started to come on lately. He is hitting the ball well, and this night was no exception. Mike went 2 for 4 and had four RBIs. Each of his hits came in key parts of the game. We started a two out rally in the first inning, which was huge in giving us some confidence through the rest of the game. Nick Chinners started the rally with a walk, then AJ Albee was hit by a pitch. Mike then came through with a single to put us up 1-0. The next batter was Tyler Howard, who hit a double to the gap. This hit easily scored AJ and Mike came barrelling around third to put us up 3-0 before Anson even came to bat. In the fifth Mike came up with the bases loaded and two outs and hit a base clearing double to put us up 7-0. The game was close in the seventh and Mike put down a two-strike bunt that moved AJ Albee from first to second, which allowed him to score on Wes Wilson's two-out single.
Another huge part of this game was Mario Sencion starting. Dan Gross was scheduled to start, but decided he couldn't after a few warm-up pitches. Mario was in the bullpen at the time and Coach Hanson told Mario that he was starting. On minimal notice, Mario threw five innings and allowed three runs. We won this game 9-3.
June 27 @Kernersville Game 1- Alex Loftin
Alex went 2 for 4, scored a run, had two RBIs, and a stolen base. On top of his offensive performance, he had three assists at shortstop and got us out of some jams while making a couple of tough plays look pretty easy. In his first at-bat of the game, we had Mike Goltz on base when Alex hit a triple to the gap. Also in this game, Mike Pagano pitched well again. He allowed three runs on four hits. Mike pitched a complete game, which really helped our pitching situation. We ended up winning the game 6-3.
June 27 @Kernersville Game 2- Zach Deutscher
After catching all of Game 1, Zach took to the mound in Game 2. Zach struggled early, but was able to settle down. Zach also pitched a complete game, but ended up coming away with the loss as we were not able to muster any runs and were shutout for the first time this season. In the first inning, Zach allowed two runs on two hits and three walks. Those were the only runs he would allow the rest of the games. Although he got into trouble throughout the game, he regularly got out of it with the help of our infielders, Steele Myers, Alex Loftin, and Steve Galella. These three turned three double plays in six innings. We lost 2-0.
June 28 @Carolina Game 1- Tyler Howard
Tyler gets his second Player of the Game honors as a pitcher this season. He has done a fantastic job in an unexpected position for us this year. Tyler allowed two runs, neither earned and had five strikeouts in six innings pitched. This is at least the third time this season we have had a pitcher earn POG by pitching a great complete game but still earn the loss. Our offense came away with 11 hits, but we were only able to get one to cross the plate. We lost this game 2-1.
June 28 @Carolina Game 2- Morgan Gregory
Morgan was 2 for 3 in this game, with a run, two RBIs, and a triple. Morgan struggled earlier in the season, but has worked hard and has really played well as of late. In the last seven games, Morgan is hitting .385, with four RBIs, and has played well at third and first. Morgan helped us come out on top and win this game 9-1.
Mike DiPietroplo also took an unusually role today. In true Joba style, we took Mike from the bullpen and he started Game 2. Mike is not used to being in the starters role, but did a very nice job. In five innings he allowed no runs and struck out two.
Rodney Francis also played well scoring two runs and pitching the last two innings. After looking at Rodney's past statistics, this is the first time he has pitched since he was eight. In that game Rodney gave up 15 runs, including three homeruns to that kid who usually hides on the end of the bench. Much better this time around for Rodney!
This Week
We play two against the Monroe Channelcats this week. Tonight's game is in Pageland and starts at 7 p.m. EST. Wednesday we play at Monroe and start at the same time. Dan Gross will pitch today and Mike Pagano will pitch on Wednesday.

Roosters Split with Kernersville
Split with Bulldogs
We split two games with Kernersville at Kernersville yesterday. We won Game 1 by a score of 6-3. We were able to take advantage of some errors made by the Bulldogs to turn the game into a win. Mike Pagano earned the win. He allowed three runs on four hits.
We lost the second game 2-0. I believe this is the first time we have been shutout this season. We haven't hit the ball very well this season, but this shutout is a definite credit to the pitcher. He threw a lot of strikes and was able to keep us off balance. We had just one hit in this game. We were actually one hit by Kernersville when we played them a couple of weeks ago, but were able to come out with a 2-1 win in that game.
League Website
The league website should be up to date in the next couple of days after having problems with the server. When things are updated again, I believe there will be a little more of a jam at the top of the standings. Monroe and Anson have been playing well and our five game skid last week hurt us. All in all, it has been a good season so far.
Game Change
Today's game location has been changed from Elliot Wadell High School to Weddington High School. The address for those coming to the game is 4901 Monroe Weddington Road in Matthews.
Stats and Season Updates
I will not be able to update anything tomorrow, as Jessica, Maggie, and I are headed to Raleigh for church and to meet up with friends. I will hopefully be able to spend a good amount of time updating the blog and stats on Monday during the day.

Streak Stops at Five
It's been a week, but we finally won. Dan Gross was scheduled to start on short rest, but after throwing a few in the bullpen pitches, he said he wouldn't be able to go. Instead, Mario Sencion got the notice a few minutes before gametime that he was going to start. He threw five shutout innings and left in the sixth. We hit the ball well also. The final score was 9-3. The win puts us at 12-8, which I think means we are a 1/2 game back of Anson for first. I will try to update more tomorrow.
There is a schedule change for the weekend. Tomorrow's game against Carolina was cancelled. We will play two at Kernersville on Friday and two at Carolina on Saturday. I will try to update times and locations tomorrow.

Losing Streak HIts Five Games
We lost to Anson last night, 10-2. Mike Pagano pitched seven solid innings allowing just two runs. We blew up in the ninth and allowed seven runs. We committed three physical errors, had a few wild pitches, and committed numerous mental errors. We continue to struggle at the plate, but should be able to get through it if we put in the work that we need to on our off days.

Team Updates
Statistics, Pictures, and Website
Team statistics can be found here. Also, there are pictures from last weekend's games against Kernersville can be found here. The league website, www.thsbl.com, has had some server problems. Most of the info on there was lost, so the site manager and league is trying to get everything updated as soon as possible.
Players of the Games
June 16 vs. Charlotte Crowns- Dan Gross
Dan pitched another great game for us on Monday night. We have a team policy that if we shutout a team, the pitchers who threw in that game get to take batting practice the next day. Dan barely missed his chance two weeks ago when he allowed just one hit against Carolina. However, that hit happened to be a homerun. Because of his shutout, Dan took some solid BP on Wednesday. Dan ended up going eight innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits.
June 18 vs. Charlotte Crowns- Mike Pagano
For the second game in a row, a pitcher was our player of the game. Unfortunately, Mike was on the short end of a poor offensive and defensive night. Mike pitched six innings and gave up two runs, neither of which were earned. He struck out ten and walked none. We were unable to muster enough runs to get Mike the win on Wednesday.
June 20 @Monroe Channelcats Game 1- Steve Galella
Steve had a nice night in our loss on Friday. In this first game Steve hit a double in his first at bat. Steve also had a single and went 2 for 3, had a stolen base, and was hit by a pitch. Also of note is Alex Loftin. Alex went 1 for 3 with an RBI. He also came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth. He then struck out the side to keep the game within five runs for our last chance in the top of the seventh.
June 20 @Monroe Channelcats Game 2- Tyler Howard
On the offensive side, Tyler was 1 for 4 with a double, run, and walked once. On Friday though, Tyler earned Player of the Game honors for his work on the mound. As many of you may know, we are short on pitching and extra-inning games such as this one do not help our situation at all. Tyler came into the game in sixth and pitched 5 2/3 of shuout baseball before Monroe was able to win the game with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh. It was one of the most fun games I've been a part of in a long time and I was extremely proud of how Tyler worked on the mound.
June 21@ Catawba Valley Stars Game 1- Dan Gross
Dan pitched another fantastic game. He shut down some very good hitters in the Stars' lineup. He pitched a complete game allowing just two runs, but still was given the loss. Our offense began to get out of our hitting slump by putting up ten hits in seven innings, but we also left nine players on base and were only able to muster one run.
June 21@ Catawba Valley Stars Game 2- Alex Loftin
The game was actually stopped in the third inning, so Alex's statistics don't count, but I felt I shouldn't mention what he had done up to that point. Alex got us started in the first inning when he hit a homerun to left field as the second batter of the game. In his second plate appearance he walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was standing on third when the umpires pulled everyone off the field. You can read more about our Saturday trip below.
Player of the Week- Dan Gross
Dan has been consistently excellent all summer long. This week was no different. He earned Player of the Game honors both nights he pitched this week. For the week he threw 14 innings, allowed two runs, one earned run, struck out nine, and walked none. Dan currently has an ERA of just 0.69 and opponents are only hitting .141 against him.
Saturday Trip to Catawba Valley
We knew early that there was supossed to be rain in the Catawba Valley later in the day, so we hoping we could get in at least one game. Friday night we seemed to be dragging a little bit, even with the great 11-inning game we played in the night cap. I can tell the players really changed their attitudes for yesterday's games.
We were invited to hit at Alex's house before heading to the field. So we met at noon and were able to get a large van just before we left, which made things easier. Because of the van, we didn't have to caravan four vehicles. Instead, Alex led the way and we followed in the van.
I was really impressed with the facilities at the Loftin house. For those who don't know, the Loftins live in Denver (North Carolina, not Colorado), which is about halfway between Monroe and Hickory. When the Loftin boys were younger, the family built a baseball field and indoor batting cages. They now rent out the cages and fields and a minimal price to little leagues and other teams in the area. We really appreciate them letting us use their facilities.
From the Loftin house, it was then onto Hickory for the game. We played at a minor league field. The team that plays there, the Hickory Crawdads, are part of the Pittsburgh Pirate Organization. When we were pulling in, a few of the guys asked if we were at the right place. It was neat to play in a stadium, but in my opinion, the actual playing surface was kept as well as what we play on in Pageland. The professional dugouts, stadium seating, and all of the billboards along the outfield fence gave the game a really neat feel.
We lost the first game 2-1, but I was happy with how things went. Although we left a lot of men on base, we hit the ball a lot better than we had been. The players stayed a lot more upbeat than they had in this week's previous games when we had lost. We got a great start in the second game, but of course were rained out. While we were delayed, the guys horsed around in the dugout and watched a lot of movie clips on the jumbotron.
On our way back, we stopped at Little Cesar's for some takeout pizza. On the way back I took two wrong turns, but nobody minded since it just extended our Name Game. The Name Game is a common game collegiate teams play on road trips that tests their knowledge of current and former Major League Baseball players.
All in all it was an enjoyable trip, even though we weren't able to come away with a win. On Saturday, we started to play a lot more like we were at the beginning of the season. Our next game is tomorrow against Anson at home. Mike Pagano will be starting.

Pageland Loses Game 1 2-1; Game 2 Delayed
Saturday Games
We lost 2-1 in Game 1 at Catawba Valley yesterday. Dan Gross pitched another great game. I haven't done the stats for the game yet, but I believe neither of those runs were earned. Unfortunately, we were only able to put up one run. On the positive side, we were hitting the ball much better, just couldn't get it done with men on base. We left runners on base in every inning except one and left runner's on in scoring position in every inning except two. In Game 2 we were up 2-0 in the top of the third when the game was called. It never actually rained at the field, but there was lightning all around us. After about 30-45 minutes the umpires called the game. Catawba's coach, Coach Speaks, said we can hopefully make up the game later in the season.
Website Problems
Our league website, thsbl.com, is having trouble. The server is currently down and we are working on getting the problem solved. However, I have know idea what that means. Hopefully it will be up and running soon enough.
Stats and Players of the Game/Week
I plan on working on this weekend's statistics this afternoon after church and will hopefully have them posted in before 7:00p.m. so I can watch the Fresno St./UNC game. I have a lot of reasons to root for the Tar Heels (we're in the Tar Heel Summer Baseball League, living in North Carolina, Pageland High School Coach is a huge UNC fan, and it would be nice to see them win it after losing in two straight), but the underdog factor is too strong and I am going to be rooting for Fresno St. Plus it would be cool to have the Georgia Bulldogs and Fresno St. Bulldogs for an all-Bulldogs Championship Series. I am a bulldog fan since I have been coaching for the CU-Nebraska Bulldogs.
Enjoy your Sunday!
